Batterie issue 2002 Nugget

My friend has a 2002 Nugget and I’m looking for a Nugget specialist to fix or review the electrical part related to the batteries. Is there someone known to be a Ford Nugget specialist that you know of (in Germany, Netherlands or Belgium)?
Earlier this summer my friend had the batteries replaced just before a 10-day trip to Norway. This was done at a well-known camper dealership in NL. They put in 2 new AGM 80ah batteries and greased the sliding door, but we’re very pricy (766€) !
The batteries didn’t allow for enough power to camp 2 days ( used to be 4 days!) and didn’t provide enough power to start up the heating system (which runs on the van’s diesel).
The camper is now back at the dealership for review and they say there’s a problem with the converter ... The batteries are unloaded too deeply and they are trying to regenerate them.
We are very sceptical and have little trust in the dealer and bills are always huge. In my opinion the 2x 80ah is much too low for even moderate stand-alone camping.
I would like to find a trustworthy expert to upgrade the system with a warranty.
Do you have good advice please?
Many thanks!
Best Regards,
Jesse

Dear Jesse,
sorry for the inconvenience with the battery system of your friend's Nugget!
Usually the 'starter-battery' (SB) has a capacity of 80 Ah, while the 'camping battery' (CB) has up to 140 Ah. When the car is parked and the system works normal, the batteries are not connected together, because a so called 'isolating relais' separates them. Electricity (for heater and fridge etc.) is only drawn from the camping battery. When connected to 220 V AC, the in-built converter charges the camping battery. To verify this, you should connect a 12V-meter directly to the CB. The reading should be higher than 13,8 Volts, reaching beyond 14 Volts in the beginning.
When the engine is started, the two batteries are connected together by the a.m. 'isolating relais'. Both batteries are charged by the vehicle's generator simultaneously. This should also be checked by a Volt-meter (a separate one, not the one placed in the display), and the reading is expected to be well over 13,5 Volt on both batteries.
Regarding the problem of deeply unloaded batteries (both?) I would first of all check, if the connecting cable between the starter- and the camping battery is OK. There are 2 fuses in the cable, one near the CB and one near the SB / isolating relais. Maybe the CB was never charged?
Best regards,
Rüdiger

Thank you very much for you info and help! You’re confirming what I suspect... I’m having my friend check if the dealer hasn’t replaced the SB instead of the CBs! That would explain the 80A and all issues.
But the Nugget has only 1 SB, right? ... So why did they bill 2 batteries?!
I’ll give feedback as soon as I have news.
Best,
Jesse

Hello,
correct, - unless it is not a proper Nugget, but a "Euroline". Looks quite similar, but is a 3-row, 7-seater inside. Check the outside stickers on the body.
Best regards,
Rüdiger

And believe it or not... they actually replaced the SB instead of the CamperBatteries !!
Tomorrow the CB’s will be replaced.
We hope all issues will be resolved with this. I’ll keep you informed.
Kind Regards
Jesse

After much discussion, the camper dealership replaced the CamperBattery.
What surprises me is that the Nugget apparently has 2x SB 80ah and just 1x CB 140Ah... So according to Rüdiger's info it would after all be a converted Euroline then?
What capacity CB do most of you have installed (without solar panel)?
We are curious for next camper trip.

Jesse

usually, there is only one starter battery (under the driver seat). When there are two of them, this was probably done by a previous owner as a backup).
Hopefully the new ( and costly!) Camping battery will do the job as expected.
Did you test the charging voltage yet? (directly on the CB with the engine running)? It would be wise to do so in order to prevent a possible deep-discharge of the new CB.
Best regards,
Rüdiger

Yes thanks for this important reminder! My friend is having it checked asap.
And I will go over end of this week and verify that.
Appreciate your help, thanks again!
Enjoy the sunny after-summer everyone !
